Shifting into the Tech Revolution

The Fourth Industrial Revolution (Industry 4.0 or 4IR) is here and it’s happening all around us but now more than ever it is moving into overdrive, forced by Covid-19’s lockdown protocols.

Has this just fast tracked the Fourth Industrial Revolution?

“4IR is characterised by the rapid evolution of multiple digital technologies and their integration with each other, as well as with the physical and biological worlds”. It is believed that 4IR technologies will have “the potential to propel digitally-ready countries into a new age of unprecedented economic prosperity.” and that it “has the power to better working lives – improving wages, increasing productivity and enhancing work-life balance”.

The South African Government has acknowledged the importance of 4IR by appointing the Presidential Commission on 4IR in the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies as Cyril Ramaphosa sees 4IR as the “answer to South African economic woes and widening inequality gap”

4IR is already in the workplace thanks to the coronavirus which forced us to move into the world of virtualization and the use of technologies to perform our daily tasks and requirements efficiently. With Covid-19 not going away and 4IR happening around us, companies will have to continue changing their way of conducting their business and will have to keep pace with and embrace its evolving technology.

But how will businesses do this and what are the pros and cons:

Keep employees working remotely more often and less at the office

1. Pros

For Employees :

  • Spend less time travelling to and from the office.
  • Spend less on travel expenses.
  • Have less stress when not dealing with peak-hour traffic.
  • Have more free time.
  • Should be less traffic on the roads.
  • Fewer distractions from colleagues inviting you for coffee or smoke breaks.
  • Be happier with this better work-life balance .

For Employers :

  • Become more productive and efficient with processes and technology.
  • Office space and size can be reduced.
  • Have fewer office overheads – e.g. electricity, floor and desk space, aircon, canteen, printers & printer supplies, telephones etc.

2. Cons

For Employees:

  • Will need to find the balance as remotely can be a less personal way of communicating and working. This can be solved through the use of different technologies and/or platforms.
  • Will need to manage distractions at home and still work the required hours. This can be solved via our up and coming solutions we are building.
  • Less corroborative if the correct systems are not used.

For Employers:

  • Will need to manage employees and performance mostly at a distance.
  • Will need to provide tools for project and time tracking and for virtual team meetings.

Build better and smarter processes

1. Pros:

For Employers:

  • Will increase the efficiency of their business, increase workforce productivity and reduce business risks.
  • Can incorporate purchased software tools to streamline project and time tracking, billing and virtual team meetings.

2. Cons:

For Employers:

  • Upfront costs for:
    • the purchase of software tools like project and time trackers or online team meetings.
    • other company specific processes to be re-designed and developed as not all purchasable software will cater for a business’s needs. Initially customised software will cost you more but you will see the ROI and long term savings will be realised as your solution can be white-labeled and sold.
